Traffic Trombone (what it is and how you get them)

blog.ipspace.net/2011/02/traffic-trombone-what-it-is-and-how-you/
Every so often I get a question "what exactly is a traffic trombone/tromboning". Here's my attempt at a semi-formal definition. Traffic trombone is a term (probably invented by Greg Ferro) that colorfully describes inter-VLAN traffic flows in a network with stretched (usually overlapping) L2 domains. In a traditional L2/L3 data center architecture with small L2 domains in the access ...

Prevent Trombone Routing with L2 DCI

networkengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/277/prevent-trombone-routing-with-l2-dci
I would like to redesign a network that has workstations, servers, mgmt interfaces--lots of stuff-- in a single vlan. And, as noted, this single vlan spans an L2 DCI. But if I break all this stuff out into seperate vlans, then inter-vlan routing will be necessary. So, I would like to route between vlans without transiting the DCI.

When Stretching Layer Two, Separate Your Fate - Packet Pushers

There are traffic optimization problems that crop up when stretching L2. Search for "DCI traffic trombone" to do some reading on that issue and possible solutions. And of course, with any technology as complex as EVPN, you're introducing to the network something else that can break.

DC Interconnect - Part 1: Primer - Hasan Mansur

Layer 1 DCI may be seen in FC interconnects. Layer 2 DCI is typical for VM and IP address mobility. (Care should be taken with regards to Traffic Trombone, which we will briefly look into, below) Layer 3 DCI could be seen where the payload is iSCSI, or in database transaction replication. Let us look at the Tromboning aspect of a Layer 2 DCI.

Revisited: Layer-2 DCI over VXLAN « ipSpace.net blog

Traffic trombones generated by stateful appliances (inter-subnet firewalls or load balancers) are impossible to solve. Then there's the obvious problem of data having gravity (or applications being used to being close to data) - if you move a VM away from the data, the performance quickly drops way below acceptable levels .

Data Center L2 Interconnect and Failover

netcraftsmen.com/data-center-l2-interconnect-and-failover/
Concerning Data Center Interconnect (DCI), I really like the new Cisco OTV technology. (OK, you probably guessed that from all the prior articles about it.) Whatever technique you use for DCI, interconnecting data centers at L2, you have the problem of managing and optimizing inbound and outbound traffic to use the shortest path to or from the ...

A few have had trombone sections for the entire show — Madison 2017 is one example. But most of the time, it's a combination of extra cost, the need for safer drill writing, and greater fragility (half the trombone is fragile enough that a small ding will put it out of commission) that makes trombones less practical for a three-month road tour.

27th Lancers used a Trombonium (G bugle, 2 valve trombone (no slide)). The rules have always been specific that the brass instruments must be bell forward (no concert french horns or baritones) with x number of valves. Its my understanding that its the slide that makes trombones illegal under DCI rules.

Traffic Tromboning - Silvano Gai's Blog

This phenomenon is commonly known as traffic trombone or traffic tromboning, as the shape of the path taken by the traffic in the network resembles the shape of the brass musical instrument that dates back to the 15th century and whose name, trombone, derives from "tromba," the Italian word for trumpet: a large trumpet.

IMO the trombone solo in BD 2017 might have been the best written use of trombone on a technical level. Really jazzy, felt natural to the instrument, tho I'm a bit more into the Crown solo from 2016, which was also a good use, considering trombone can best "mimic" a voice for a brass instrument.
